Cameroonian Political Opposition Leader to Face Legal Proceedings Over Election Unrest, Government Announces

Election Demonstration in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon express anger over the fact that the president has secured an eighth term

Cameroon's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has stated that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over claims that he instigated "violent electoral rallies".

At least 4 demonstrators have been lost their lives during clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators since the electoral process on 12 October, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya winning an eighth term in office.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he emerged victorious, a statement rejected by Biya's ruling party, the CPDM.

Violent crackdowns by police and security officers on protesters have concerned the world leaders, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union calling for caution.

Minister's Accusations

On Tuesday, Nji accused the opposition figure of organising what he referred to as "illegal" protests causing the loss of lives, and also rebuked him for declaring victory in the election.

He further stated that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates responsible for an subversive plot" will also undergo judicial processes.

Election Results

The president, who came to power in the early 80s and is now the world's oldest head of state, won the October 12 presidential election with over half of the vote, compared to just over a third for the challenger, according to the constitutional court.

Opposition Response

The opposition figure is yet to respond to the official announcement to try him, but he had earlier stated that he rejected a rigged election - and that he was not afraid of being detained.

On election result day, he reported that gunmen used lethal force on protesters gathered near his residence in Garoua, killing at least 2 people.

Investigation Announced

Earlier this week, the government official announced that an investigation would be initiated into violent incidents before and after the publication of the vote outcome.

"During these attacks, some of the individuals involved died," he said, without giving a specific number of protesters who have been killed in the confrontations.

Nji noted that a number of members of the security forces also sustained serious injuries.

Present Conditions

Even though the interior minister asserted the situation across the country was now stable, demonstrators remain active in some parts of the nation, especially in Douala and Garoua, where demonstrators mounted obstructions on that day, and ignited tires on the roads.

Observers alert that the political turmoil could plunge the nation into a political crisis.
