Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
