An ex- Royal Marine was a “man in a rage” when he mowed down dozens of LFC fans at a championship celebration, in what many feared was a act of terrorism, a court has heard. “The footage was profoundly upsetting.” Those injured in the incident wept while video from the car’s camera depicted bodies spinning through the air while he sped towards the gathering while screaming: “Get out of the way!” Doyle, 54, will learn his fate on Tuesday following his guilty plea on the first day of his trial last month to 31 criminal charges involving 29 victims, including eight minors. ‘Consumed by Anger’ Prosecutors stated those in court that the video evidence from the defendant’s large people carrier proved to be “truly shocking”. The recording revealed the father of three shouting “expletives” as well as “fucking move” while he headed straight for hundreds of fans, with people frantically dragging children to safety as his car horn blared. The court was told that Doyle was a “individual whose anger had completely overpowered him” as he ploughed further into the crowd, accelerating as people collided with his car. Extent of the Injuries Overall, the former Royal Marine hurt 134 people in just seven minutes – including more than 50 requiring hospital care. A six-month-old boy was “miraculously” unharmed despite being left splayed on the road after the vehicle struck his stroller, according to testimony. A supporter, Simon Nash, was seen being launched into the air by the vehicle, suffering a cut on his head, rib fractures and multiple abrasions. Doyle was heard screaming “fuck’s sake move! Get out my fucking way!” before ploughing further into screaming supporters, among them an older woman and young children who became trapped beneath the vehicle. Scene of Jubilation Turns to Horror Speaking to a full court, the prosecution said approximately a million individuals were present at “what they thought would be a joyous occasion” to celebrate Liverpool winning their 20th league title. Scenes of jubilation turned to “horror”, the prosecutor said, when the driver entered the crowd while trying to collect a companion from the parade route. “Witnesses thought that what was taking place constituted a terrorist incident.” Brave Intervention Stops Driver As bodies lay on the ground, the vehicle’s path was brought to a halt by an ex-army member, a man identified in court, who entered the back of the car and forced the gearstick into park. Even then, Doyle kept his foot on the accelerator, according to evidence. In his police interview, Doyle stated he reacted in a “state of sheer panic” because he feared for his life. However, the prosecution argued that the video showed Doyle “just lost his temper in his determination to reach his destination”. The prosecutor added: “In a rage, he drove into the crowd and as he did so he intended to cause them serious harm.” Reckless Behavior Before the Attack Footage indicated the driver had been driving dangerously before he reached the city centre, overtaking cars dangerously and running red lights. He disregarded traffic diversion measures and bypassed other cars, including an ambulance and police cars, as he approached the packed streets. Doyle is understood to be facing a jail term of more than 10 years at his sentencing hearing.
