The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a inseparable trio. Their music videos frequently feature them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to start a band."

Award Milestone

The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics track endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence called for a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global following.

However the band will always be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
