The McLaren driver narrowly beat fellow driver and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the final moments of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the title advantage from his teammate by one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, beat the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Before then, Piastri had been the leading McLaren during the running before sprint qualifying due at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in realistic title contention, lying with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his team followed a different programme. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the only driver to crash, if briefly, when he rotated at Turn Four early in the session. Tsunoda lost control over the curbs on exit before spinning across the gravel trap, and was fortunate to escape with just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the very end of the session, rotating twice through the fast downhill Mergulho turn leading to the final bend on to the main straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were well clear of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car in third, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's best. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' George Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
