Cameron Norrie earned the biggest success of his career by rebounding from a lost first set to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had before overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win marks Norrie's first ever success over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in history to overcome a world No 1. "Coming back from injury last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualies here. I just sought to embrace my performance in the latter part of the year. To achieve a win like this, it's the biggest success of my professional life, my initial victory over the top player and arguably the strongest competitor in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st in the world, also halted Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive premier event wins, which marked the finest stretch of performances in the Spaniard's young professional path.

The top seed seemed to be progressing easily to success early on as he eased past the initial stanza. However, the British contender gradually worked himself into the match by delivering with sharper placement and dragging the Spaniard into extended, demanding rallies. His relentless consistency and reliability steadily made an impact.

During large parts of the contest, the world number one delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The young star appeared particularly uncomfortable hitting his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the world for a large part of this year, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 mistakes. Across the net, the British player presented his opponent very few errors, sustaining his consistency, fitness and depth throughout while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to move forward and strike effectively.
