Our Top Release of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Spot.

Initially, this album might appear closer to a challenging academic challenge rather than a new pop album from an artist whose previous single featured a global pop icon. Broken across four separate sections and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged album investigating feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and physical transformation, often by way of the prism of different women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, supported by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer ambition alone renders the work of other artists look rather small.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

That this album manages to avoid overly academic posturing is nearly a miracle, with sole praise going to the artist. While it's not her first project to blend the past and modern styles, its ambitions feel much greater here, with the tightrope walk more dramatic. The element that truly raises her fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, dense compositions, and inherent drama, is a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the iconic Björk during her peak, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you into its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing hearts apart, the listener still want to be right there for the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit shines clearly on a stunning piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for several minutes. Then, everything drops silent, and there's a gleeful giggle and a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo thuds down with comedic impact. The track immediately shifts into the frenetic single driven by galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener never quite know—or even want to know—where you will go to next."

Nearly every song concludes in a completely different point than how it began. A track explores the fleeting trappings of fame over a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous rhythmic style starts out dark and sinister, with prowling beats, until fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic choir arrive to smooth its rough corners.

The Balance Of Experiment & Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is little surprise that it has become her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. A song sung primarily in the English language builds around a refrain that seems to gather more and more infectious melodies as it spins upward. This feat gets repeated by a different expansive ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining layered melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its jaunty, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry amid of looming artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden gems that requires patience to completely mine but never seem like a chore. While some big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet at which the characters around it, some tipsy on sacred drink, flutter from conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from pop's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
