The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
